Born in Scotland and trained at Edinburgh College of Art, Penelope lived and worked in London for 10 years before moving back to her native Scotland. She has exhibited her work widely throughout Britain and in the USA and undertaken numerous commissions, both private and corporate. Penelope has travelled extensively to Morocco, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and the colour and energy of such countries has greatly inspired her work. She lived in Holland for 3 years and in Italy for a year, where she worked at the Verrocchio Arts Centre. She teaches privately and at the Heatherley School of Art in London.
"My paintings are direct emotional responses to the scene I'm trying to depict, whether it be a landscape in Scotland or a vibrant street scene in India. I am inspired by colour and energy and by the transforming and often fleeting nature of light.
The ever-changing tapestry of colour and movement in an Indian market or the continual shift of pattern in a cloudy sky; these things, by their nature, dictate the need to work fast, to try to capture the essence of something before it has passed. For that reason, I often work in watercolour on the spot, doing numerous studies later to be worked up into oil paintings in the studio."
